The responsibilities of Milton Ernest Parish Council include the following:
- Provision of allotments, including the duty to provide allotments if demanded by parishioners.
- Maintenance of the churchyard.
- Provision and maintenance of public clocks.
- Provision of buildings for public meetings and functions.
- Provision and maintenance of footway lighting, which lights roads and pavements.
- Provision of litter bins and the support of anti-litter campaigns.
- Provision and maintenance (including grass cutting) of public open spaces, playing fields and public walks.
- Maintenance of public seats.
- Maintenance of bus shelters.
- Erection of signs which warn of dangers, indicate a place name or a bus stop.
- Powers to maintain a village green.
- Maintenance and protection of war memorials.
- Maintenance of rights of way, ponds, ditches, public footpaths and bridle-ways
- The right to appoint school governors.
- The right to be notified of planning applications.
- Support and encouragement of arts and crafts.
- Acquisition and maintenance of rights of way.
- Naming of streets.
- Trustees or appointing trustees of local charities.
